Geno Smith vs EJ Manuel
It has been a tough go of it of late for the Bills as they stand on a 3 game losing streak, and have just the smallest bit of a heart beat when it comes to the playoffs. Well, if they are looking for a playoff run after their bye week next week, they will have to beat the Jets at the Ralph this week as the Jets currently hold the 6th and final playoff spot in the AFC.
The first appearance was a game that was ugly, putting it lightly. The Jets pulled off a 27-20 win at Met Life Stadium, despite having 20 penalties. Bills QB EJ Manuel had a terrible game that day, and looks to improve when he gets the rematch Sunday.
The Jets are coming off a bye week, which will likely give them an advantage with the added rest. Before the bye, the Jets had a solid win against the New Orleans Saints (that game was played at home). QB Geno Smith is really impressing many this year in his rookie season. The Jets also have a very, very good defense, in fact they are the number 1 ranked offense on a stat that takes everything into consideration. They are especially good against the run. They are ranked #1 against the run according to yards per game giving up just 73.8 yards a game. It will be quite a matchup for Fred Jackson and the Bills run game on Sunday.
The Bills will have to be very effective on the ground as they will be without top receivers Robert Woods and Stevie Johnson. Starting at WR will be TJ Graham and Marquise Goodwin, with Chris Hogan and Marcus Easley as the other active guys at that position. That will make it tough for EJ Manuel to try and come back after the horrific game that he had last week in Pittsburg. Look for Tight End Scott Chandler to be targeted a lot in this one.
Key Individual Matchups:
1. TE Scott Chandler vs. S Antonio Allen
2. CB Stephon Gilmore vs. WR Santonio Holmes
3. LT Cordy Glenn vs. DL Muhammad Wilkerson
Bills 2 MUSTs:
Play better in the secondary. In the first matchup, the Bills gave up big play after big play in the secondary without CBs Leodis McKelvin, Stephon Gilmore, and S Jairus Byrd. With them out CB Justin Rogers was a starter on the outside and gave up 2 long TDs to Hill and Holmes. Look for this secondary to play a lot better than in the first meeting.
Control the ball. The Bills will have to keep the ball in their hands to win this football game. If they force a couple of turnovers and don’t turn the ball over on offense, that gives them the edge in any game really. But, the Jets have just 7 turnovers all season long and are a -10 in turnover ratio. The Bills have 16 turnovers this season if you were wondering.
Bills Top Advantage:
Pass Rush. The Bills are second in the league in sacks with 33. They are even better at home at getting pressure on the QB. The Jets have given up 31 sacks this season. Don’t be surprised if you see Geno Smith laying on the turf a lot in this one.
Jets Best Position:
Defensive Line. The Jets have a full line on the defensive side of the ball. That is mostly why they are the best rushing defense in the NFL. Watch for Sheldon Ricahrdson, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Quinton Copels to make plays in this game.
Keep This in Mind:
The Jets have gone Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win this season. If that continues, the Bills would win.
This is as much of a MUST win game as they get. With a win the Bills stay very much in the race for the playoffs and with a loss they are pretty much are done. The QB Matchup will be rookies Geno Smith vs. EJ Manuel. Kickoff is at 1PM at Ralph Wilson Stadium. It is supposed to be a windy one in this week 11 matchup. This will be a big game for both teams in this divisional show down.
